The most improbable battle surfaced at the box office this weekend between “The Emoji Movie” and “Dunkirk,” when a dead heat between the two gave way to Dunkirk emerging as the weekend’s first place film.
This Warner Bros. production by Christopher Nolan out-performed last weekend’s box office collection of over $50 million. This only goes on to show that Nolan still has a strong draw, along with positive critical appreciation for his work. Despite lacking star power, and at the cost of being yet another World War II movie, the latter is estimated to collect$28.1 million across 3,748 locations this time.
This is the first time that a movie has been in the first place for two subsequent weekends since the same production house’s last movie, “Wonder Woman” released in early June. Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins’ has had an outstanding run since – and the collection isclose to $400 million, just in America.
Sony’s “Emoji Movie” is in the second place for this weekend with $25.7 million across 4,075 locations. This animated adventure however, received a lot of critical flak ― the reactions ranging from blah to horrible, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 8%.
The central character, a “Meh” emoji is played by T.J. Miller. The rest of the cast includes James Corden, Maya Rudolph, Anna Faris, Sofia Vergara and Christina Aguilera. Sir Patrick Stewart plays “Poop.”
Sony however, went on record to say that they were thrilled, because the audience has made the ‘Emoji Movie’ a family event.
This week’s other major release, “Atomic Blonde” struggling. This Charlize Theron-starrer is expected to rope in $18.5 million from 3,304 locations. Earlier in the week “Blonde” was being expected to collect $20 million. The opening weekend outcome has not been unfair, considering its $30 million budget.
